There was a time when a reading room was more than just a place to keep books. It was a sanctuary for curiosity, reflection, and thoughtful conversation.

Today, many of us think of a desk with a laptop when we imagine a workspace. Almost every answer is only a few clicks away. But years ago, knowledge lived on the pages of books, and wisdom was often found in long evenings spent reading, thinking, and discussing the world.

Whenever I look at this room, I imagine it belonging to a lawyer, a professor, or perhaps a statesman. I can almost see him sitting quietly in a comfortable chair, a pipe or finely rolled tobacco in hand, its gentle aroma blending with the rich scent of well-aged whisky. Surrounded by books, newspapers, and handwritten notes, he would lose himself in history, politics, philosophy, and the stories of distant places.

As a child, I remember meeting people like that. They spoke with calm confidence, listened before they answered, and seemed to carry an endless library of knowledge within them. Others naturally turned to them for advice, trusting their experience when life became complicated.

Those conversations feel increasingly rare today. Our attention is often drawn to glowing screens, and instead of asking one another for guidance, we search for answers in silence.

This photograph is a quiet reminder of a slower world—one where ideas were shared face to face, books opened new horizons, and wisdom grew not only from information, but from the conversations that brought people together.
